AIncredible craftsmanship. Richly colored leathers, fringed and tassled embellishments, fantasy and finesse, and still more remarkable is the fact that these tobacco pouches were fully functional. Open the many compartments to reveal a place for small coins, and other necessary objects with which Tuaregs might be traveling through the desert. The larger one even has the beautifully made, original brass pipe in its first section.

Hand-stitched leather thongs tie the thin, curved wood collar of this container to its gourd-like base. Lid is similarly joined. Wood pull at top. Used by bedouins in the Sahara for powders or crushed plant medicines, these sorts of jars were quite commonly found in desert caravans, but seldom lately. (6 1/2" h)
