Camel-skin containers stained with geometric russet lost-wax decorations, are carefully molded into rounded forms with elegant lids. Each is unique, but all display lovely translucence when placed in front of a light source on a desk, table, shelf, or window-ledge. The parchment box is called a "bata"and is used for perfume, cosmetics, silver jewelry, or tobacco. Fabricated initially on a clay form, it is then covered with powder, and the dried, paper thin camel-skin is applied. Linear designs are made with waxed string, using no patterns. The "battochi" are then dyed the deep red from the sorgo plant, which is like millet. The wax threads are removed, leaving a white, transparent motif. (3" - 5")
